Composition in photography is the process of combining separate elements of a photograph to form a unified whole. It is the process of arranging your subjects inside the frame to create a commendable picture. There are several principles used in composition in photography – the principles generally apply to a lot of photographs, but need not be followed for each one. Here are some of the common photography rules used in composition.

RULE OF THIRDS

The rule of thirds is one of the most basic principles used in composition. It is one of the most well-known rules in photography. The rule of thirds uses imaginary lines to divide the frame into 3 columns and 3 rows, or a total of 9 equal squares. The rule of thirds suggests that the subject of the photograph should not be placed in the middle of the frame; rather it should be placed at one of the points of intersection of the imaginary lines.

FRAMING

Framing uses the concepts of a foreground and a background to make interesting pictures. Foreground elements, usually natural elements, are used to frame the subject. These elements typically include trees or windows. When framing a subject, it is important to make sure that the subject will remain as the focus of attention, and not the elements. You may also want to blur the background, by zooming in close to the subject.

LINE OF SIGHT

Taking photographs from different angles gives an interesting perspective to the photographs. Try using unique vantage points, such as overhead shots. You can also try to use portrait shots or landscape shots. By changing the line of sight, pictures become more dramatic, and subjects can be emphasized more clearly.

LEADING LINES

When looking for a subject, search for elements that will draw the eyes of a viewer through the photograph to reach the main subject of the photo. These elements usually include a series of objects or paths, such as a winding road or a road surrounded by telephone poles. Leading lines also add depth to the photograph.

PATTERNS

When taking pictures, look for natural patterns around the environment. These can include snowflakes or birds in formation.

CONTRAST

The rule of contrast states that dark subjects should use light backgrounds; similarly, light subjects should use dark backgrounds. Creating a contrast between the foreground and the background emphasizes the subject even more, making it stand out.

TEXTURE

Texture brings a different dimension to a photograph, making the photograph more realistic. Elements that provide a lot of texture to photographs include rocks, surfaces and leaves. Hands are also good subjects to emphasize texture. To create texture in your photographs, try to position the light from the side. This will enable the light to cast shadows at specific places in the photograph.

CROPPING

There are two kinds of cropping that can be employed when taking photographs: visual cropping and computer cropping. Visual cropping requires you to crop certain unwanted details in your photographs by zooming in or out. Zooming in on your subject lessens the impact of the background on the photograph, and makes the subject stand out.

Another form of cropping is via the computer. By cropping the picture, you can delete certain aspects of the picture that are unintended. You can create different sizes and even try various shapes, such as panoramas.

These rules of composition are not hard and fast rules when taking pictures. However, these are good principles to keep in mind and can help you develop your photographic eye. After much practice using these rules of composition, you are sure to create wonderful pictures! Source: http://www.vstudios.us/

You’ve already built a professional portfolio, given out your resumes and composite cards, even found a good talent agency – but how do you get the modeling job that you want? Here are some tips on how to get modeling jobs.

PLAY UP YOUR FEATURES

In the modeling industry, it is not enough that you have good looks. Learn to accentuate your features to gather more attention. Practice your smile and your walk. It is important to always look your best, because you never know when you will run into somebody important.

Also, don’t just focus on your face. Having a good body counts, too. Make an effort to keep yourself fit and healthy. Try to wear clothes that will show off your body and that will emphasize your best body parts.

KNOW YOUR MEDIUM

It is also a good idea to know in what kind of medium you look best. This will help you determine where to audition for. If you look good on paper, try sending out your application to magazines. If you look better on screen, try applying for television commercials or shows.

AUDITIONING FOR A JOB

Be on the look out for places where you can audition for a modeling job. Go-sees are common, and give talent agencies the chance to see whether you can work in a certain project or not. You can also try to do VTRs, where you will be shot from various angles with a video camera. This can help clients determine whether you are perfect for the job or not.

CHARACTER ACTING

If you don’t have that perfect face, don’t despair. There are modeling jobs waiting for those people known as character actors. Character actors are models who aren’t hired specifically for their looks. They are hired because they fit a certain role to a T. As a model, you have to know what roles you can play and what characters fit your personality. Whether you’re “the teenager”, “the mom”, or “the plus size model”, knowing which character you are can help you determine which jobs to audition for.

THE RIGHT ATTITUDE

Being a model does not mea forgetting your manners. A good model will not last long in the business if he or she has an attitude problem. Try to be more sociable. Practice introducing yourself to people and talking to people who you’ve just met. Build a good relationship with your agent, since he or she is a huge factor in whether you succeed in the modeling industry or not.

Be confident, but don’t be arrogant. Know how to take rejection gracefully, and don’t give up so easily. The modeling business is not an easy one to get into – you’re sure to experience some pitfalls along the way. It is imperative that you know when to keep on going and when you have to stop.

GETTING READY FOR THE JOB

Now the audition’s down to a few people. What do you have to do to get the job?

You have to stand out! Be on time, and learn how to be patient. Don’t wear any make-up unless you have been instructed to do so. Most shoots have their own make-up artists and hair stylists. If you arrive earlier, you can get started on the hair and make-up earlier, and chat up the other people already present.

BUILD YOUR NETWORK

Just because you don’t get a job doesn’t mean you can’t get anything from it. Get to know various people from the modeling industry. Attend fashion parties and various events, and meet different people. By gradually building your network, you will surely find other modeling jobs that you can apply for!

Digital cameras are gradually becoming a ubiquitous part of society. With all the available choices, how do you know which one to get? Here are some of the basic things you need to know before making your choice.

RESOLUTION

One of the first things most people notice in a digital camera is its resolution. However, as opposed to popular belief, higher resolution does not necessarily mean better pictures. Of course, cameras with a higher resolution do allow you to create larger detailed photographs and allow you to crop pictures whichever way you want.

Before choosing what resolution of camera to get, first determine for what purposes you intend to use your digital camera. If you are a professional photographer, you will most likely benefit with a high-resolution camera. If, on the other hand, you are only a casual photographer, then it may be best to settle with a 4- or a 5-megapixel camera.

ZOOM

When choosing a digital camera, take note of its zoom properties. There are two kinds of zoom: digital and optical. What you are looking for is optical zoom. While digital zoom only crops and magnifies your pictures, optical zoom provides you with more power by moving the lens nearer or farther away from the subject. Nowadays, cameras are having greater zoom capabilities, reaching even up to more than 10x optical zoom. If you want a really good camera that produces the sharpest photographs, find a digital camera that has extended-zoom capabilities with images stabilization properties.

SIZE

Although bigger cameras may be packed with more features than their smaller counterparts, bigger cameras are also bulkier and take more effort to carry around. Thus, if you’re a person who likes to take photographs of every day things, or if you like to travel, getting a small camera that would fit snugly in your bag or even your pocket would be best.

BATTERIES

Digital cameras use two different kinds of batteries: some cameras use the replaceable AA-type of batteries, while the other camera uses the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Each has its own benefits and disadvantages. A replaceable AA-battery is a great choice for travelers, especially those who frequent remote locations. Batteries can easily be bought at most stores, and does not require you to carry around a bulky battery charger and a converter.

On the other hand, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery is likely to be more economical in the long run. This is because you don’t have to repeatedly buy new batteries to operate your camera. Lithium-ion batteries last for several years, and can also be replaced when it breaks down.

MEMORY CARD

Before buying a camera, it is also a good idea to know a little about memory cards. When buying a memory card, it may be a good idea to buy several cards with smaller capacities than a single card with a huge capacity. This is because memory cards do break down; by putting all your pictures in a single card, you run the risk of losing all your pictures. If you find that it takes a lot of effort to regularly alternate your memory cards, you may find it useful to buy a memory card with a higher capacity and at least one other with a smaller capacity that you can use to back-up some of your photographs.

When choosing a digital camera, pick the best one that lies within your budget. If, given all these, you still are unable to decide what digital camera to get, try reading reviews of cameras by various credible sources, such as tech magazines and websites. If you’re still undecided, then by all means, try out different cameras first. Ask to take pictures of various objects and see how you like them!

Taking group photographs is an art in itself. Much work is needed to create group photographs wherein no one subject dominates and everybody appears as equal subjects. Lots of events involve groups of people, such as weddings, parties, school activities and sports teams, making group photography a very useful art.

CHOOSING YOUR LOCATION

Before taking a group photograph, it is important to find a good location first. The perfect location helps provide context to the photograph, and can say something about the people in it. An example would be a sports team posing on their court.

Find a location where the entire group will fit. Look for a place that has few distractions in it, with adequate lighting.

LIGHTING

As with any other kind of photograph, group pictures require adequate sources of light to be able to capture a good photograph. Go outside if possible, and use the sunlight as your source of energy. If you are taking a picture of a small group, a flash from your camera is usually enough. Make sure that the flash is able to capture everybody in the group with equal illumination.
It is not advisable that a reflective substance, such as glasses or polished wood, is behind the subject. This is because the reflective substance will most likely reflect the camera’s flash.

ZOOM IN

When taking group pictures, especially when a lot of people are present, try to maximize the frame. Get in as close as you possibly can by zooming into the group. By doing this, you will be able to create a shot with more details of the group.

POSITION THE GROUP

Before taking a group shot, make sure that the people in the photograph are positioned fairly well. Generally, groups can decide on what pose they want for themselves. The photographer will then provide some advise to the group regarding their chosen pose.

Taller members of the group should generally be placed at the back of the photograph or at the sides of the picture, to avoid attracting more attention to them. For events where only one or two people are the centers of, such as in birthdays or weddings, it is a good idea to make them the central point of the photograph.

LARGE GROUPS OF PEOPLE

When photographing large groups of people, a good idea would be to elevate yourself from the rest of them and use a bird’s eye view. By doing this, more people will be able to fit in the photograph. Also, a bird’s eye view is a unique way of taking pictures and can add a sense of drama to the shot.

TIME YOUR SHOT

Group shots should be taken when everybody in the group is ready. At certain events, it is best to take a group shot at the start of the event, as everybody is still present and sober during that time.

MULTIPLE SHOTS

The more pictures you take, the more likely that you can get at least one good shot. Thus, it is a good idea to take multiple pictures of groups of people quickly. Some cameras have a continuous mode, where shots are taken one after the other. When viewed one after the other, the shots will appear like a moving picture.

EXTRA EQUIPMENT

When taking group photographs, a tripod is a useful tool. It allows you to become more involved with creating various poses for the group. At the same time, you can also get the chance to join the group in a group picture.

Taking great group photographs says a lot about the photographer. It is a valuable skill that can be used every day. Try it! Source: http://www.vstudios.us/

Lens flare is a common mistake that occurs in photography; at the same time, it can also be used as a technique to give a dramatic effect to the photograph. Lens flare occurs when light hits the lens and consequently, the camera’s sensor. Lens flare typically appears as a polygonal ray of light on the photograph.

CAMERA FACTORS THAT INCREASE LENS FLARE

Your camera may contain factors that increase the susceptibility of your photographs to lens flare. These include lenses and lens filters, to name a few.

Lenses can greatly determine the amount of lens flare in your photographs. Generally, zoom lenses avoid lens flare better than fixed focal lenses. Wide angle lenses are also less likely to result in lens flares. More modern lenses that have more advanced anti-reflective coating systems are also better at protecting against lens flares.

To be able to minimize lens flare, lens filters should also contain anti-reflective coats. Certain kinds of filters, including polarizing and ultraviolet filters, can actually increase lens flare. This is because these kinds of filters provide additional areas where light can reflect on.

COMPOSITION

There are several ways to avoid lens flare in your photographs. The best, and most economical, way to minimize lens flare is through composition.

The most effective way to eliminate lens flare is to take pictures with the source of light at your back. However, this does not always create the best pictures, and can create shadows on your photographs.

Another way to eliminate lens flare using composition is to make sure that the light sources that can cause lens flare are completely obstructed by other objects. Try using your hand or a hat as a shade. Remember to do this carefully, so as not to create unwanted elements, such as shadows, in your photographs. A tripod may also be useful when trying to diminish lens flare in this manner.

LENS HOOD

Another way to avoid lens flare in your photographs is by selecting a good lens hood. Some lenses have lens hoods that are built into them; others, however, require you to buy the hood as an extra. A lens hood helps reduce and eliminate lens flare. To do this, the lens hood should have a fully non-reflective surface, making sure that no areas have rubbed off.

There are basically two types of lens hoods: the petal lens hoods and the round lens hoods. Petal lens hoods are typically better at reducing lens flares than the alternative. Petal lens hoods also consider the camera’s aspect ratio; thus, the angle of view in one direction is more than the opposite.

Plenty of lens hoods cannot block all the light reaching the camera. Thus, if the lens hood is not adequate, you can modify it to make it more extensive. You can place a piece of paper at the side that is closest to the source of light. You can also use adjustable bellows, which can be adjusted exactly to address your specific needs. However, this option is a lot more expensive than the alternative.

PHOTO EDITING

In cases where the lens flare cannot be avoided and an image taken became washed out, there are also several tools that a photographer can use. These include the levels tool and the contrast enhancement tool. These tools allow you to minimize the amount of lens flare in the photographs, although the quality of the picture may also be diminished.

Lens flare is not always a bad thing. Lens flare can actually be utilized as an artistic element in a photograph. It all depends on the photographer and how he or she intends to use it. Source: http://www.vstudios.us/

Passports are one of the most commonly falsified documents. This, along with various terrorist threats that have hounded different countries of the world, has led to the implementation of more stringent requirements for passport photographs. Compared to other identification documents and cards, passports impose one of the strictest requirements when it comes to photographs.

To make sure that your passport photograph does not get rejected, you have to ensure that the photograph adheres to the specific passport photo requirements of the country you will be visiting.

WORLDWIDE PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPH REQUIREMENTS

There are basically three passport photo requirements that are employed worldwide. These photo requirements are necessary no matter where you will be going. These include the following:

1. The subject of the photo should be facing front.
2. The subject should be photographed clearly, with a clear focus and visible eyes and ears.
3. The subject should not smile in the picture.

The no-smile rule is a new requirement implemented by all countries. This is necessary when implementing measures of biometrics.

ADDITIONAL PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPH REQUIREMENTS

Additional photograph requirements may be imposed by specific countries. Thus, before traveling to any country, research on the specific passport photograph requirements that is the country imposes.

For example, when traveling to the United States, specific passport photograph requirements include that the passport should have been taken within the last 6 months. Also, if you typically wear a medical equipment, such as prescription glasses or hearing aids, you will also have to wear them for your passport photograph. Dark and non-prescription glasses with colored lenses should also not be used in the passport photograph.

HOW TO TAKE ACCEPTABLE PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPHS

When taking a passport photograph, there are certain principles you have to make sure you follow.

The typical size of a passport photograph is approximately 2 x 2 inches. The photograph is colored, and is printed on photo paper. The printing is clear, and has a continuous quality. No enhancements or editing may be done on the photograph. Retouching the photograph is also not allowed.

The entire head of the subject should fit within the borders of the photograph. The eyes of the subject should lie 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 inches from the lower edge of the photograph.

The background used for a passport photograph should be white in most formats. That is, unless your hair is white. Your hair should not blend in with the background or your clothing. You will also not be allowed to wear anything on your head, such as hats or caps.

When taking a passport photograph, most places will require you to wear a plain top with a collar. Also, you cannot wear a top where the logo of the clothing will be visible on the photograph. Uniforms are not allowed, unless they are religious clothes that you wear on a daily basis.

When submitting a passport photograph, it is also important to not let anything get in the way of the subject’s face, such as staples. If the staples are too near to the face of the subject, a new photo will have to be submitted again. Some experts suggest that instead of using staples, the subject’s picture can be glued.

IN CONCLUSION

Passport photographs should be able to represent the owner of the passport accurately. If you’re traveling to a specific place, it would be a good idea to inquire what their passport photograph requirements are. Call the Embassy in your country and inquire. If you follow specific passport photograph requirements, you will not have to go through the hassle of getting your photograph rejected and being forced to submit a new one.

Before a model becomes a model, he or she was just an average person. How did they manage to go from obscurity to popularity? Here are the ways to do it.

ARM YOURSELF WITH KNOWLEDGE

A good place to start is by reading. Not just modeling books or magazines, but also publications about fashion, grooming, health and etiquette. Learn about the basics of the art of modeling – how to walk, how to talk, how to smile for the camera, how to put on make-up, even how to take care of your skin. Television shows and the internet also provide a wealth of information regarding these topics.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

It is also a good idea to enroll in a modeling class or a professional modeling course. A modeling course can help you in determining which features to emphasize and how to look confident. Personal enrichment courses are also helpful in achieving this end. Aside from these, joining a modeling course can also help you form contacts with prominent people in the industry.

MAKE THE NECESSARY PREPARATIONS

If you’re really serious about becoming a model, then consider creating your portfolio. Your portfolio must include some basic information about you, your vital statistics, your previous modeling experience and some of your best photographs. This is what you will present to your potential clients, and will be one of the bases that will determine whether you get a job or not. Thus, it is necessary to find a good photographer who can take professional pictures of you. A plus would be if the photographer has previous experience in making modeling books before.

Also, don’t forget to print out composite cards. Composite cards are cards containing a collection of your pictures which you can submit to potential clients, together with your resume. Potential clients can then store these for future reference.

INCREASE YOUR CHANCES

To increase your chances of getting discovered, be visible. Attend various events and parties where a lot of people from the modeling industry are bound to gather. Fashion shows are good places to start, and allows you to meet designers and directors.

It is also a good idea to find a talent agent. Talent agents can help you form networks with other prominent people in the industry. They can also help you find modeling jobs.

BE DISCOVERED

There are several ways for models to be discovered. A lot of stories abound about the normal person walking around the mall when she is suddenly approached by a talent agent. However, this only happens to a few people.

Not everybody is lucky enough to get discovered by chance. What a lot of models actually do is audition. Talent agencies typically hold castings and go-sees, where various aspiring models can apply for a certain project. Models can be asked to act on-camera or be taken pictures of. These will help talent agencies find out how the model will look on print or on television.

Some aspiring models also join modeling competitions or reality shows. Talent agents looking for models typically visit these competitions.

When auditioning, although it is important to look your best, it is also important to look natural. Try as much as possible to wear just a little make-up, and pick out clothes that will show off your body’s shape while accentuating your assets.

Although looks still play a big factor in the modeling industry, nowadays, models aren’t limited to the tall, pretty, skinny girls. Almost anybody who has the perseverance and the right attitude can get into modeling. There are various ways to get into the business – just look around, and you’re bound to find something!

Scams are quite prevalent in the modeling industry. Fake talent agencies looking to prey on the dreams of aspiring models are abundant. When starting out in the modeling industry, it is important to be wary of such scams and take certain precautions when dealing with people in the business.

Typically, a person pretending to be a talent agent approaches you. He or she tells you that they are looking for models, and that you are perfect for the job. You will then be requested to go to a follow-up appointment at their office. However, instead of discussing modeling plans with you, these so-called agents will start on selling modeling classes to you. Some so-called talent agents may also require you to undergo a photo shoot for an unreasonably exorbitant fee.

Fake modeling agencies use various tactics to scam hopeful models. Here are several tips to help you avoid them.

FEES

Never pay an up-front fee to a person pretending to be a talent agent. Modeling agents get their fees by getting a commission on the bookings they arrange for their models. Agents asking to be paid by the model before any bookings are made are not really talent agents. Also, be skeptical about talent agencies that only accept cash as payment.

PHOTOGRAPHS

It is crucial for a model to have a portfolio prior to attending go-sees or interviews. Fake modeling agencies will require aspiring models to pose for their own photographer, who typically charges a higher than normal fee, usually from several hundred to a thousand dollars. What usually happens is that the fee is split between the so-called photographer and the talent agent, and the model never gets signed up for a job. To prevent this from happening, find your own photographer and have a few pictures taken. It is a good idea to have a basic portfolio ready when meeting with a talent agency.
There are also certain photographers advertising free photo shoots for hopeful models. Before obliging, ask the photographer where the photos will be used. Some photographers offering free shoots sell your photographs to certain publications, allowing them to earn money out of you without you knowing it. What’s worse is that your pictures can be used in inappropriate ways or be sold to objectionable publications. Also, be wary if the photo shoots will be conducted in bedrooms of hotels or other non-public places. Be safe, and don’t allow these unscrupulous individuals to bully you into doing something you don’t want to do.

TRAINING

Some fake modeling agencies require you to undergo a training session with them for a certain fee prior to registering. Do not believe them. Real modeling agencies may send you to undergo training courses elsewhere, but will not ask you for money immediately. The fees for the training courses are usually deducted from your talent fees once you have started earning from jobs that the agency has set up for you.

COMPETITIONS

Some competitions require models to pay fees to enter the competition. These fees will allegedly cover the expenses for the competition, such as the photographs that will be taken of you. These competitions are most likely scams. Genuine talent agencies holding competitions do not require aspiring models to pay any fees.

DOCUMENTS

Read all documents prior to signing, including the fine print. Focus on sections or paragraphs that deal with your contract period, the fees that you have to pay, and the use of your photographs. Ask the company for a couple of days to review the contract, and request for a blank copy of the document that you can take home. If the company does not oblige, then there’s a high possibility that it is a scam. It is best to find a lawyer to review the contract with.

When dealing with a talent agency, try to get some background information on them first – ask if they are members of any modeling organizations, and inquire about models who they have previously signed and found work for. Make sure you verify the information.

If you have been scammed by a fake modeling agency, don’t be afraid to take action. Inform your Better Business Bureau or file a complaint at the Federal Trade Commission. Source: http://www.vstudios.us/

One of the most important things that a model will have to do is to find a good modeling agent. A modeling agent can either make or break a model’s career – finding a good modeling agent will make sure that you get the best modeling jobs and get the utmost exposure.

WHAT IS A MODELING AGENT?

A modeling agent is an individual who is responsible for submitting your portfolio to various photographers and art directors. Modeling agents negotiate your fees and manages your booking schedules.

A lot of models get modeling jobs because of their modeling agents. If a photographer or an art director has a good relationship with a modeling agent, the agent’s recommendation may be highly considered.

Typically, a modeling agent charges 15-25% as commission for every booking he or she sets up for you.

WHERE TO FIND A MODELING AGENT?

There are various ways to find modeling agents and to contact them. A simple way is to search for modeling agents or agencies on the Internet. Most modeling agents or agencies have websites where they showcase photographs of their clients and place their contact numbers. Some websites even have a page for models who wish to apply online. Most of these online applications require that an aspiring model send in basic information, including vital statistics, and pictures of himself or herself.
Another way is to buy a directory containing a list of modeling agents and agencies in your specific area. These directories are usually sold by companies handling modeling products and information.
Certain modeling agents do not entertain phone calls – instead, potential models have to personally meet up with the agent in his or her office. Some agents schedule an open call, where various aspiring models can meet up and discuss with the agent. Models would have to bring their portfolios to the open call.

SIGNING WITH A MODELING AGENT

As a model, you can either choose to sign an exclusive modeling contract with an agent or do freelance modeling work. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.
Signing an exclusive modeling contract prevents you from accepting bookings from other modeling agents. The advantage to this would be that the agent can effectively maximize your schedule, since he or she handles all your work. The downside would be if the agent is unable to get you a modeling job.
A piece of advice to new models: be careful when signing long-term deals when you’re just starting out. These kinds of deals can sometimes weigh you down more than it can help you. Make sure that you are signing with a legitimate agent and that you understand the details of the contract.

HOW TO FIND A LEGITIMATE MODELING AGENT

The most important thing to remember is that modeling agents never ask for a fee up-front.

When meeting with a modeling agent, ask about which models he or she is signed with. Also request to view some of the works his or her models have worked on.
If you’re still wary about the modeling agent, contact the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) or the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) in your locality. You can ask them for a list of modeling agents who have signed up with them. Modeling agents who have are more likely to be legitimate. You can also contact the Better Business Bureau or the Models Guild if you have any complaints regarding the modeling agent.

Connections are worth a lot in the modeling industry – choosing your modeling agent is the first step to getting the right jobs, meeting the right people, and becoming famous in. Source: http://www.vstudios.us/

If you want to produce a high quality publication, it is advisable to utilize a professional printing service. Professional printers help make your work more presentable and more enticing to potential customers.
When sending your work to a professional printer, you have to first understand that what your work looks like on your computer is different in a lot of ways compared to what it will appear like once it gets printed. Here are some tips on what you should do to get the best out of your professional printing service.

CONTACT THE PRINTING SERVICE

It would be a good idea to contact your professional printing service prior to even starting your design. Ask the basic differences between the computer image and the printed output, specifically with regards to the fonts and the graphics. By doing this, you will be able to design and modify your work appropriately. It is also important to agree on certain aspects of the printing, such as the quantity of the project, which paper and what trimmings to use, and the necessary deadlines. You may also want to ask the printing service for any recommendations to improve the printed publication or any suggestions on how to save money in the printing process.

COLOR

It is advisable to use CYMK as the color format for your work, instead of RGB or indexed colors. RGB formats usually produce better pictures on the computer, but result in lower quality prints. Try to avoid using special colors, since these colors will typically require an additional fee.

IMAGES

If you need to have images printed, save the images in EPS or TIFF format. These two formats ensure that the images have high resolutions. Also, most professional printing services are more skilled in these two formats, making last minute adjustments easier to accomplish. If you’d rather send the images in another format, such as JPEG or GIF, it is best to ask your professional printer regarding this first.

FILE TYPE

Most professional printers work with PostScript Files, or what is commonly known as PDF files. There are several computer software programs you can use to convert other files to PDF files.

PAPER

Presentation is a big part of a publication; thus, aside from the file itself, it is also necessary to determine the physical attributes of a printed work. Among other physical attributes, you can ask the printers for their selection of papers. Papers have different substances and weights. Typically, heavier paper is more expensive than lighter paper. If you will be mailing your work to other people, it will also be more expensive if you use heavier paper.

DELIVERY TO A PROFESSIONAL PRINTER

There are several ways to deliver your work to a professional printing service. Portable storage devices, such as CDs and USB disks, can be used to transfer your files to the printers. If you’re busy to go to their office, you can also send your files online, via e-mail. However, larger files usually take a while before they can be sent and downloaded. Another way to deliver your work is by sending a master copy. The master copy should be printed in high resolution.
Before sending your work to a professional printing service, don’t forget to ask what tasks they can do. If a professional printer can’t execute a specific task, they might be forced to send your work to a third party. This might cost you even more money. It is also a good idea to ask a professional printer on what types of publications they specialize in, such as books, catalogues or business cards. Try out various printing services, depending on what you need and what they do best.

A final note: it is not a good idea to sacrifice the quality of your work in order to save money. Your work will reflect who you are and will determine whether you get clients or not. Don’t settle for anything less than what you want! Source: http://www.vstudios.us/
